The Healthiest Superfoods For Your Liver
Liver health is vital for various issues and reasons in your life. If you are concerned about your fertility for example, you need your liver to be in excellent health to help produce the hormones needed for pregnancy. You may be concerned about your liver health if you are a recovering addict as well. Regardless of the reasons you choose to focus on your liver health, there are some superfoods that can help.
Spinach, turnip greens, collard greens, beet greens, and other related hearty greens are all fabulous phytonutrient choices. These help to not only protect your liver, but also to cleanse it. My favorites for liver health though, are cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, collards, etc). These bad boys contain a compound called indole-3-carbinol which help the liver detoxify.
Garlic is a cleansing spice that has medicinal properties. It also happens to be a superfood. This superfood is naturally full of compounds that can help break down toxins and remove them from your system without doing heavy damage to your organs like an over the counter chemical liver cleanse may do. It also helps when you are coming off an addiction, such as alcohol, that could have already caused some damage.
Inflammation in general is so common in our society today due to our diets and lifestyle habits. Turmeric can help with that. Fresh is always best, but if it’s too hard to come by, an organic powdered turmeric is just fine. My favorite way to use it? As a ‘golden milk.‘ An added bonus? It’s quite relaxing, so have it in the evening to help you wind down for bed.
A common misconception is that those with fatty liver should cut back on fats. Nope, not the case. While yes, you should cut back on trans fats (fast food, vegetable oils, margarine, etc), high quality fats actually help with liver health. Some of my favorites are avocados, MCT oil, olive and avocado oil, and nuts and seeds.
Milk thistle is generally found in capsule form and sold at most health food stores. It is used to not only treat liver issues, but to also help repair liver damage. This is an ideal superfood supplement to take as needed, even on a daily basis, for liver health. My hack? I take a milk thistle every time I have an alcoholic beverage to give my little liver some love.
